Melvin Lindquist turned cherry burl natural top bowl, marked on bottom "Melvin Lindquist cherry burl 10-86", 7" dia x 5.5"T with 2"dia opening. Melvin Lindquist (1911-2000) was an engineer in the 1930s, he operated a vertical turret-lathe for General Electric. He began his artistic career around the same time in his workshop in the Adirondack Mountains, where he discovered spalted wood in the 1950s. His study of Oriental, Native American, and Greek, vases have influenced the ceramic quality of his pieces. He developed techniques of blind boring and reverse turning to create hollow vessels. He was also one of the first to explore the use of scraps and more delicate pieces of wood that were previously considered unsuitable for turning.
