1896 Khodynka Cup of Sorrows, also known as Russian coronation cup for Emperor Nicholi II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, marked with a crown over the initials "N J", on reverse having the "Romanov Eagle", 3.5" dia x 4"T. On May 18, 1896 over half a million people gathered at Khodynka field in Moscow, with the rumor being that in each cup was a gold coin. Over 1,000 people were trampled to death in the wake of confusion and stampede in what is now known as the "Khodynka Tragedy". The name "Cup of Sorrows" was given by Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna and the Emperors nickname to become "Bloody Nicholas".
