After 50+ years of collecting straight razors, Robert A. Doyle will be offering at auction his life-time collection of fancy and unusual straight razors. Up for bid now are 240 lots of the finest, unique celluloid handled razors featured in Doyle’s book, Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors, Reflecting on Fifty Years of Handle Designs (1870-1920), published in 2005. Also offered are additional pieces that were found after the book was published and some original cutlery advertising display cases. Doyle, an Auctioneer/Appraiser/Real Estate Broker, started collecting at 16 years of age and turns sixty-seven this month. When asked why straight razors? Doyle responded, "They are small, beautiful, historic, one-of-a-kind artistic pieces that are nearly impossible to reproduce. There are no "fakes" to be concerned with." He continued, "It is time to allow others the opportunity to own and enjoy these beautiful shaving tools. The straight razor was the most prized personal tool of men through the ages." Copies of the book, Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors, Reflecting on Fifty Years of Handle Designs (1870-1920) are available.

Straight razor. Gppe. Garibaldi. Flat black celluloid handle has oval German silver frame inlaid outlining small portrait of “Garibaldi.” Pile side is plain, flat black celluloid. Rare. Giuseppe Garibaldi (4 July 1807 in Nice – 2 June 1882 on Caprera) was an Italian general, politician and nationalist who played a large role in the history of Italy. Same design on pile side. I have viewed five other razors with different makers on same handle pattern: Cattaraugus, Clauss, Genco, Wilbert and J.R. Torrey. The pattern is on both sides. I have witnessed this pattern on Antoni Tadross, Crown & Sword and Asco Cutlery blades. Note the similarity of the background scrolling banner to #108. Quite scarce. This razor was featured in my article "A Look at Fancy Celluloid" in the June 1983 issue of "The Blade" magazine. This razor was illustrated on the front cover of "Straight Razor Collecting, An Illustrated Price Guide," That I wrote and published in 1980. This razor was featured in my article "A Look at Fancy Celluloid" in the June 1983 issue of "The Blade" magazine. They also appear in color on page 118.
